Business Objects provide a natural way to depict everyday business transactions such as customer profiles, products, inventory, order taking, etc. Business objects show up to the end user (customer service reps, sales reps, etc.) as an icon that represents a certain business component. They work on top of CORBA frameworks. For example, a customer service rep receives a call from a customer who wishes to place an order for a camera. The rep clicks on the 'customer profile' business object and brings up the customer's profile which lists address, contact name, previously ordered products, and credit status, the rep then clicks on the 'products' object and finds the camera and drags it over to the customer's profile screen. The rep clicks on 'order' and just like that the transaction is completed. The rep could have also clicked on the 'inventory' business object to determine if the camera was in stock.Setting Business Objects standards is the next wave for the OMG now that they have CORBA or the plumbing completed. OMG is about to adopt the spec submitted by the authors and IBM with a final and official version due in November of 1997. Author: Eeles, Peter, Sims, Oliver ISBN-10: 0471191760
